DescriptionFounded in 1950 by Don and Lucy Gridley in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the Hiawatha Card Company started by publishing postcards. The company became working with Colourpicture Publishers, Inc. in April 1950, a Massachusetts business that reproducted original photographs and color slides, etc. The Detroit branch of the company was sold in 1959 for $53,000. 1966, Hiawatha Card Co. sued Colourpicture for infringing on copyrights for 803,855 postcards published by Colourpicture. Court findings found that Coulourpicture infringed on 83 copyrights owned by Hiawatha and were charged $20,750 in damaged to Hiawatha Card Co. When the Gridley's retired, John and Alice Penrod, operators of the Penrod Studio, purchased the Hiawatha Card Co. in 1969. The new company was named Penrod/Hiawatha.
