The Northern Michigan Asylum, Traverse City State Hospital, and the Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital operated between 1885 and 1989. This collection spans the entirety of the institution's lifespan, the aftermath of the closure in the 1990s, and the redevelopment of the State Hospital grounds in the 2000s. The contents of this collection are related to the operation of the hospital, employees and persons associated with the hospital, and the redevelopment of the grounds.

This collection consists of photographs and documents, primarily from the mid-twentieth century to the early twenty-first century, and AV materials. Including two boxes of the Steffans collection. This collection includes 3D artifacts and three VHS tapes. Box 11 is a collection of twenty-nine class photographs (consisting of only two original photographs and twenty-seven reproduction prints) of the student nurses from the Traverse City State Hospital Training School for Nurses from the years 1908-1940. The collection of the class photographs is almost a complete set, but is missing the years 1915, 1924, 1925, and 1931. Box 12 is a collection of mounted photographs and prints relating to the Traverse City State Hospital, focusing on the maintenance department at the Traverse City State Hospital, recreation, the hospital’s herd of cattle, and the power plant. This collection does not include any private medical information or restricted patient related material.
