August Geringer was the founder and owner of the Geringer Publishing House in Chicago, Illinois. Born in Březnice, in the Příbram District of the Crown Lands of Bohemia under rulership of the Austrian Empire. He and his wife Antonia Kolářová (Geringer) emigrated Europe for Chicago in 1869. He brought with him many books in Czech that filled a void of reading material for Czech-Americans. He founded a printing workshop and developed a publishing house. Specializing in publications in Czech language, Geringer Publishing House published novels, children's books, calendars, and non-fiction. In addition, Geringer founded and published a number of different czech expatriate newspapers/periodicals, including Svornost, Amerikán, Rarášek, and Duch času. Svornost was the first daily independent bohemian newspaper in the United States. Amerikán was a weekly newspaper consisting of content published in the daily Svornost newspaper.
