A weekly (later a bi-weekly) newspaper first published on October 25, 1875 by August Geringer in Chicago, Illinois. The daily newspaper, Svornost (also published by Geringer) was closely tied to the Amerikán. The Amerikán was mainly for rural subscribers and was popular because of its political, conscientious, and non-partisan content. The goal was to provide Czech readership in the United States the same reading material that was available to other ethnic groups in the United States, to inform Czech readers about current political happenings in their homeland and in the United States. This newspaper provides a vibrant window, through which we can explore expatriate Czech-Nationalist thought, their lives as immigrants, and news from far flung Czech communities in the United States.
